Pockmark Orange (isolated seeds)
The Pockmark Orange is a striking superhot variety originating in Australia, created from a cross between the legendary Ghost Pepper (Bhut Jolokia) and Pimenta de Neyde. This unique combination produces heavily textured, irregular pods along with dramatic coloration that makes Pockmark Orange an impressive variety both in the garden and in the kitchen.
Pods begin dark green to nearly black and can develop shades of deep purple before transitioning through purple-orange tones and finally ripening to a brilliant orange. During the ripening process, the combination of dark purple and glowing orange can give the peppers an almost molten-lava appearance. Mature pods are typically deeply wrinkled, bumpy, and pockmarked, giving this variety its distinctive name.
Pockmark Orange is an extremely hot pepper, generally ranging from approximately 800,000 to 1,000,000+ Scoville Heat Units (SHU), putting it firmly into the superhot category with heat comparable to the Ghost Pepper. Despite its intensity, the pods offer an enjoyable sweet, fruity flavor with subtle earthy undertones before the powerful, long-lasting burn takes over. Its combination of flavor and extreme heat makes it an excellent choice for hot sauces, fermented sauces, pepper powders, flakes, and other recipes where serious heat is desired.
Plants are vigorous, bushy, and productive and can display attractive darker pigmentation inherited from the Pimenta de Neyde side of the cross. The unusual foliage, dramatic color changes, and gnarly orange pods make Pockmark Orange a standout choice for growers and collectors looking for something both beautiful and brutally hot.
